5 tips for parents, students and teachers on how to take care of yourself

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

These are difficult and uncertain times for everyone. It is very important for us to look after our own mental health in order to be able to support our families, our colleagues and others in our communities. UNICEF´s Executive Director Henrietta, in consultation with psychologists and counsellors, has put together 5 important steps in looking after yourself.

  1. Stick to a routine. A good routine helps to ¨ground¨ or anchor you in uncertain times. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Shower, get dressed, exercise.

  2. Stay Connected. Communicate often with friends, family and colleagues. Open up about how you are feeling and encourage others to do the same. Check-in often, particularly with those who live alone.

  3. Engage in hobbies or things you enjoy. Sing, paint, read, listen to music, garden, sew, knit, listen to podcasts, watch movies.

  4. Set up a Worry Window. Allocate a specific time where you give yourself permission to worry. If you find yourself worrying at other times during the day, gently remind yourself to wait until the worry window.

  5. Engage in Wellbeing Practices. Use mindfulness and meditation apps, keep a gratitude journal and note 3 things you are grateful for every day, exercise regularly.
